I'm a Believer in Search and Destroy

What's your least favorite multiplayer game mode in the Call of Duty series?  For me it has always been Search and Destroy.  I'm a true believer in Search and Destroy now.  Certainly won't ever be my favorite game mode, but I actually enjoy it now.  I have finally been playing Search and Destroy regularly to achieve the operations achievements in Modern Warfare 2.

I have always found Search and Destroy to be not only the most annoying but also the most difficult game mode in the Call of Duty games.  My particular game style usually involves more running than being careful.  As much as I have tried, I have never been able to have a positive kill/death ratio in the Call of Duty games, I have had the infrequent game where I have a positive ratio, but since it doesn't come easy to me, I play whatever is fun for me.

Why do I like Search and Destroy now?  Is it the massive potential for points?  No, it's definitely a plus if you need some big points, but it's not hard to go an entire match with no kills at all, no assists, no points, very tough if you've just spent 15 minutes getting killed by the other guys.  The best part of Search and Destroy is that it will make you a better player if you play to survive.

The most frustrating part is that there is no respawning during rounds.  It's also what can elevate your gameplay in all modes.  You only get one chance, so you learn very quickly all the site lines where somebody can shoot you before your time.  Makes you proceed with caution and not just run into everything without ever looking.  I know the maps better than ever now, just because it forces me to always be looking out for where someone could be lurking that could end my round.

It's true that most Search rounds end in one team killing the other and then winning that round.  There are very few plants and destroys of the target.  In order to successfully plant the bomb you really need to clear the area of enemies, and usually that results in killing off the other team, or the other team killing yours.  It can really take some good teamwork to plant the target and win a round.

There is also the potential for individual and team heroics.  I've been on both ends of a heroic comeback during a match.  The standard Search and Destroy match consists of 3 rounds on target attack and then 3 rounds on target defense.  It takes 4 round wins to win the match, if it's tied after 6 rounds, then it goes into overtime.  Sometimes a team will win the first 3 rounds, essentially every round after this would be a match point round, 1 more and your team wins.  Often the other team will come from 3 down and win the next 3 and the overtime round.  There are no guarantees, even if it seems like you have the momentum in the match.  So there is potential for team heroics and you always have to play hard because you can lose the match even when you are on the brink of victory.

Huge potential for individual heroism as well.  There is a unique feature that lets everyone know who the last remaining player(s) are in the round.  I've seen single players take on 2 or 3 opposing team members and come out on top.  The whole time you are the last man, your team is following you and watching your every move, if you haven't gotten a kill yet in the match, this can make you quite the hero for your team if you pull out the round winning kill or bomb plant or defuse a bomb.  It's very exciting to follow a lot of players, kind of nerve wracking when you get the message "It's all up to you now! Finish the mission!"

Search and Destroy, play it to win, your game will get better, be a hero to your friends!

Golden Eye 007 Reloaded: Coming 11/01/2011

The GameCube Nintendo 64 version of Golden Eye 007 was one of the first games I played socially with my friends.  We would get together and play on a splitscreen on his big screen TV.  It was loads of fun, we would play 2 on 2, or they had a game mode where we would all be matched against computer opponents (not easy!) I remember seeing Oddjob come around the corner and panicking, he was so tough. If you don't remember the movies he had the top hat with a knife edge built into the brim.  In the game he was a relentless pursuer and if he could throw his hat, it was OVER! You had to run to get to cover and then setup so he couldn't get you and you could get a clear shot on him.

They had really cool weapons too, my favorite was the guided missile, it basically provided you with the view from the tip of the missile so you could guide it across the map to your enemies base. We all know that playing online multiplayer has in it some elements that are less than real, why not have cool fantasy weapons like this?  Isn't gaming about having fun?

Golden Eye 007 Reloaded will also have multiplayer.  I would love to play it on new consoles, graphically looks great, most likely won't be a game changer, but will provide a refreshing change from the blockbusters of today.  The review I read at Destructoid says it will be more for people who haven't played a lot of first person shooters, and it is rated Teen as opposed to Mature for the top tier shooters.  Here is the full review from Destructoid.

Experience the GoldenEye game updated for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 with beautiful graphics, upgraded multiplayer capabilities, multiple controller types, and enhanced gameplay customizations.

Product Features

  • Refined. Recharged. Reloaded.
  • True Next Gen - Experience GoldenEye on the next gen platform with stunning visuals, fast frenetic action, covert stealth gameplay and unforgettable characters.
  • Upgraded Multiplayer - Replay the multiplayer game that defined a generation but, now, with all new enhancements:
  • Customize your gameplay with more modifiers and weapon loadouts than ever before in BOTH the single AND multi-player campaigns. Play with standard controllers, Playstation Move, the Playstation Sharp Shooter, or the Top Shot Elite. You decide

Which 3 is your 3 in 2011?

2011 is shaping up to be a great year for games.  Moving closer and closer to the Christmas season what is your most anticipated Three Quel of 2011?  What do the numbers show us for games ordered and pre-ordered? What are your favorites?  Gears 3 is right up there in the online gameplay charts on Xbox Live, Battlefield 3 is lagging behind Black Ops and Modern Warfare 2 with Gears 3 pulling in the fourth spot.

I'm curious to play Battlefield 3 myself, but have limited gaming budget and have to go with the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 game.  It's fun, it's proven, really wonderful game.  What are you playing?

IGN has a more in depth story, Third Time Lucky?

Gears of War 3 - Gears of War 3 is the spectacular conclusion to one of the most memorable and celebrated sagas in video games. Developed by Epic Games exclusively for Xbox 360®, Gears of War 3 plunges you into a harrowing tale of hope, survival, and brotherhood. Meanwhile, deep beneath the surface, a fearsome new threat is infecting the planet from within. With survivors scattered and civilization in ruins, time is running out for Marcus and his comrades as they fight to save the human race. The Gears of War series is one of the most popular franchises in Xbox history, with more than 12 million games sold worldwide, a forthcoming major motion picture, New York Times best-selling novels, and more.

Extra Life 24 Hours of Gaming for Charity on 10/15/2011

Extra Life is having a 24 hour gaming event on October 15, 2011.  Welcome to Extra Life, an annual 24-hour video game marathon that raises money to help kids at Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. It’s never been this much fun to do this much good. Just click the Register Now! button to get started. You'll get your own personal page to help your fundraising efforts and track your progress.

This year’s event begins at 8 a.m. on Oct. 15, 2011. Each participant is asked to raise money by recruiting at least four sponsors to give $1 for each hour of the marathon (that’s just $24 per sponsor).

What makes Extra Life so incredibly easy is you can do it from the comfort of your own home. While many churches and schools do lock-ins for Extra Life, you don’t HAVE to go anywhere. What’s more, you can play any game or games you want to during the event. Xbox 360, PS3, PC, even games on your phone count.

If you can’t play the full 24 hours on Oct. 15 nobody is going to kick down your door and stick a controller in your hand. You can make up the time later, or even get ahead by playing some of your 24 hours BEFORE the event.

The important thing is to make the commitment to help local children get better. All the money you raise will stay at the Children's Miracle Network Hospital near you.

Thank you for taking the time to be a player, a donor or to simply spread the word to other gamers.

On behalf of over 3,500 past and present Extra Life participants, welcome.

Some of the people I game with are participating, join their team or donate:
